Make Everyone Your Favorite

We have had some major changes in the Watson house over the past month. The holiday season always adds a (welcomed) level of chaos. But, on top of that, I took a new job that has me working outside of the house for the first time since Turner was born! To make a long story short, I owned an amazing local vacation rental company called Dewees Rentals that had grown to the point that I needed help! I had been doing this alone and working from home. It got to be more than I could handle all by my lonesome, which is a good thing!

I had cultivated a relationship with a larger company in the area over the years called Charleston Coast Vacations. I got together for lunch with the owner of that company about 2 months ago to come up with a plan that would be mutually beneficial. What we decided was for my company to join with his and to work for him as his Director of Vacation Rentals in his Isle of Palms office. It ended up being an answer to prayer in a not so obvious way! That being said, the whole first-time-out-of-the-house thing has been an adjustment.

Yesterday, as I sat in church, the sermon was exactly what I needed to hear! How does that always happen? One major point the pastor made was, “Make Everyone Your Favorite”. That hit me like a ton of bricks! I had been so consumed in my own world that I hadn’t even opened my eyes wide enough to see the people around me, let alone make them my favorite! My mind is like hamster wheel. It really never shuts off: there’s work to be done, the house to be cleaned, laundry to be folded, the groceries to be bought, the presents to be wrapped, and on and on. The whole point is, if we make others our favorite, we shine like a light in a world where there is so much chaos happening! But our small act of kindness can make a huge impact on another person’s day. What an incredible thought to ponder, ESPECIALLY at Christmas! I never want to be too busy or consumed in my own “stuff” to make an impact on others. It was the perfect reminder as I prepare for this week and for Christmas!!!

It really is the most wonderful time of the year! It’s cozy meets crazy in the best way possible. But what’s really important for me to remind myself is that we are so fortunate. Even if the day to day brings ups and downs, we have the hope of Jesus, a roof over our heads, food on our plates, and these two angels! Merry almost Christmas!

Things I learned From My Broker Class

As you may or may not know, Stew and I own a vacation rental business. To make a long story short, in order to function, we need to have a “Broker In Charge”. Ours moved to CA and didn’t want to continue as our broker. So I had to go to a 2 week class to get my broker in charge license so our sweet little biz could keep running! While in my class, I learned a few things…

  1. I love our business! I love that we have personal relationships with all of our clients and guests. I love making it possible for guests to have the vacation of their dreams and to protect our clients’ investment properties!
  2. I LOVE working from home. I get the best of both worlds. I get the joy of watching my children grow up before my eyes and being a part of their day-to-day, yet preserving my identity as a professional. I talked to a lot of the other realtors in my class and we share this sentiment. I don’t take a single second for granted. I am blessed for sure!
  3. I have a new respect for parents who work out of the house. I was on the road by 7:30 am (sat in traffic) and home by 6pm (after sitting in traffic) and got to see my family for about an hour before sending them to bed. I know that’s the norm, and it is hard!
  4. I am so thankful for this crew of mine. I am blessed far more than I will ever deserve!

Summer Days

We have quite a solid routine these days. Since Stew’s been working with me for our rental business, it’s been nice tag-teaming between work and play. Stew spends his days on Dewees, while Turner and I hold down the fort at home.

We start our day at the gym, run some errands, then head home to have lunch and the occasional smoothie date. Then it’s pretty much hanging out at home while mommy makes phone calls and works on the computer. He’s gotten quite good at entertaining himself while I work. I feel like it’s all he’s known since I’ve worked from home since he was born.

Then it’s the beloved nap time. He naps from about 1:30-4 give or take. That’s my time to hunker down with an iced coffee and relax or get more work done.

Stew usually gets home shortly after his nap and it’s full on game time! The second he walks in the door, Turner harasses him, “Pway Dwums!” “Baseball” “Chase You” “Pway Catch”.

And then there’s Stew’s genius invention where he turned our wagon into a portable sandbox. Turner pulls his sandbox out of the garage and then we can put it back when he’s done! That way it doesn’t get rained on or filled with bugs.

I’m really enjoying this summer. Turner is so much fun and quite hilarious. All he wants to do is play. I just wish I had enough energy to be the one running around with him! Soon, we’ll have another little munchkin adding to the fun! Can’t even wait.

My Secret Island

Dewees Island isn’t so secret anymore! I’ve been working for DeweesRentals for that past 6 years. Last July, I actually took over the company! It’s been such a blessing. I couldn’t ask for a better “job” in the world! I get to work from home, enjoy raising my child, AND spend time on this private island! Turner has enjoyed every second of growing up a “Dewees Kid” too!

Over the past year, my former boss has worked tirelessly with Yonder Blue Films to create the most amazing video to capture the very essence of Dewees. By golly, she did it! We even had the pleasure of taking part in some of the filming! Turner might become famous from this one day! I couldn’t be more proud of our quiet little island and how the word is getting out more and more!

So Much Happening!

The past few weeks have been INSANE. We have been going a million miles a minute. I finally am able to catch my breath!

Some of you may know I was the Executive Director of Dewees Rentals right here on Dewees Island. Well, a few months ago, I was talking to my boss, and she was throwing around the idea of selling the rental business. I was surprisingly ok with it. I wasn’t worried, because my Rodan+Fields side job would generate enough money that I could really be a stay at home mom! I mean, that would free up my time, A LOT, to focus on Turner and Stew (and me, in theory).

Well, after lots of talking, crunching numbers, praying, and more talking, I decided that I would take over the business! This all happened in the past 3 weeks. I’m really excited about it. The best part is, I can still do it from home! Stew was the one who really helped me make the decision. He’s a contractor which makes getting things repaired much easier! He said he’d go out there and do any maintenance he could! So, needless to say, he’s been out there every weekend for the past month. The dust has finally started to settle and things are getting back to normal.

I had a breakfast meeting this morning, but Stew was off (finally). So, when I got home, we were able to enjoy some family time! It’s been far too long since the three of us spent a full day together. It was amazing. We didn’t do much, but the lack of doing was refreshing! It was stormy which is the best when you have nowhere to be!

After the rain slowed down, and Turner woke up from his nap, we went for an early dinner at a pizzeria around the corner. It was delicious! I talked to the owner and told him how much I loved his pizza. Turned out he was the owner of a pizza place in the tiny town I’m from in NJ! No wonder I loved it. Turner was a big fan too.

We came home from dinner, grabbed the dog, and went for a walk. Felt good to get back into our little routine.

As I read Turner The Kissing Hand before bed tonight, I was so overwhelmed with love for this little ok giant person. It feels like yesterday that he was this pudgy blob that couldn’t communicate. Now he’s such a smart little boy! He talks so much and is such a little creature of habit. It’s amazing watching someone develop and learn right before your eyes! I thank God for him and want to make the best life for him!

Staycation on Dewees Island

One of the beautiful things about managing a rental business on Dewees Island, is that I get to spend time there! This past weekend, we went to spend a night in one of my favorite houses, Charlotte’s Pearl.

Dewees is one of those places that feels SO far away from everything but is actually so close to the modern conveniences we love! I am still surprised every time I ride the ferry to and from the island and realize how close it is to town! We were so tucked away on Friday night on our little private island, but within a 20 minute ferry ride the next day, we were hopping in our car and heading to Target! It’s quite an experience!

This was our first vacation as a family! I was a little nervous about Turner sleeping in a strange room with a strange crib, but he did great! I was also nervous about Ellie barking and waking us up in the middle of the night, but she was awesome too! My coping mechanism for things out of my comfort zone is to make lists….lot’s of them! I had about 5 to-do/packing lists that helped me stay super organized!

There are no stores or restaurants on Dewees, so I took a little help from a delivery service! Traveling with as little as possible is definitely the best way to do this trip! I used Baby’s Away for Turner’s baby gear (crib, stroller, booster seat). They were AMAZING! They met us at the ferry and unloaded everything right at the dock!

We also used their grocery service, called Groceries Ahead, so we didn’t have to worry about grocery shopping on the way! They had our groceries at the dock too! All we had to do was load up the ferry and hop on the boat!

Once we arrived, we instantly relaxed. My intern, Jesse, helped us load our luggage onto the golf carts and came with us to the house to help us get settled in!

We put Ellie on the gorgeous wrap around screened porch with her bed and toys, and she was as happy as a clam!

Friday afternoon, after Turner’s nap, we popped him in the stroller, Ellie in tow, and walked across the street to the beach!

Then we came back to the house to get supper ready! I had some chicken marinating in the fridge all day with olive oil and some spices. Stew popped that on the grill while I put together a salad and roasted up some sweet potato fries with a little oil, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Dinner was a big hit! Our food somehow tasted much better out there!

The next morning, we woke up around 7. We brought Turner into our bed for our usual coffee, bottle, and snuggle time! It was just starting to get light outside when it dawned on us… LET’S GO SEE THE SUNRISE! We grabbed Ellie, jumped in the golf cart, and hopped across the street to the beach. We JUST made it!!!

Then it was back to the house to make some breakfast!

After breakfast, we headed out to take in the views, see some nature, and play!

What an adventure we had! We made so many memories and had some great quality family time, unplugged from the hustle and bustle of everyday life! Turner and Ellie were as good as could be! Now that we know they’re up for vacations, we might just be taking weekend getaways out there more often!!

February Beach Trip

February in Charleston means we go from ice to pollen in about 10 days flat. I’m definitely not complaining! It’s one of the many reasons I stayed here after college.

February is one of my favorite months. I am definitely sad to see the holidays, festivities, and delicious food go! But then I get super excited, because February brings my birthday, Valentine’s Day, and Stew’s birthday all in a row!! Plus, the end of February starts spring fever! The sun is shining and the days are getting longer. That makes me one happy momma!

This spring and summer will be the best yet! Turner is so much fun, and I know he will love playing outside. For the past few days we’ve been playing in the yard and the street with his walker. This is his absolute favorite toy! He walks laps around the house all day. He even strolls up and down the street, in our yard, and in every neighbor’s yard with a giant grin on his face. He doesn’t care whose yard he trespasses in! Luckily, they all think it’s cute, for now.

Today, since it was in the 70s, we took a little lunch break and had a picnic at the beach (one of the many benefits of working from home)!  I packed up our food, a blanket, and the walker because, let’s face it, that’s all we would really need!

After scarfing down his lunch, and a little bit of sand, Turner was ready to play!

He walked and crawled (because, let’s face it, I can get there much faster) all over the beach! He chased birds and screamed at the top of his lungs! He even found a few pretty seashells! He sure knows how to have a good time!

What a way to recharge my batteries for the rest of the day! A picnic with my munchkin is the best “reset” button I could ever push! It definitely got me even more excited for beach weather! Maybe this year I won’t have to be the “sand eating police” and we will just PLAY at the beach! Sending sunshine your way!!!

Business Launch Event

This past Friday was my Business Launch Event for Rodan & Fields. I already work full time (from home) AND take care of Turner. But, when I learned that the dermatologists who created Proactiv created an anti-aging line, I had to be a part of it! So this is just an easy way to earn some extra spending money without much effort!

We’re not a “party” company. But, every new consultant has a “Launch Event” to share the business. I chose to invite a few girlfriends over to share my business venture and play with our products! My theme was “Leave the Aging to Wine & Cheese”. Cute, right!? (A 5X7 digital file of my chalkboard design is available on Etsy).

It was such a fun night! I felt so supported and loved by my friends. It was all about the wine, cheese, and skincare products!!

The girls ended up staying here till after 11! My eyes haven’t seen that time for years!! Stew even got to go hang out with one of his friends! It was a great way to send January off on a positive note! Here’s to new adventures and to being social!! Happy Sunday!

13 & 14 Month Must Haves

I feel like I was just planning Turner’s first birthday party, and he will be 14 months old tomorrow! Where does the time go? I honestly lost track of how many “months” he was once he turned one until someone asked how old he was today. I almost said, “he just turned one” and then realized…yea that was two months ago!

So, the past two months have been a blur of chemo (almost done!!), stomach viruses, and puppy madness. But, through it all, we still managed to pick out a few of our favorite things to share with you! Enjoy ;o)

1. Radio Flyer 32 All-Terrain Steel and Wood Wagon-Turner got this wagon for Christmas. He adores it! We throw him in there with a bunch of pillows and blankets, and he just wants to ride around nonstop! It’s adorable.

2.  Micro-dermabrasian Paste & Night Renewing Serum – Rodan & Fields is the anti-aging line from the same doctors who created Proactiv. I recently started selling their products as a SIDE SIDE  job (I already work from home full time). I am absolutely OBSESSED with their products! One of my favorites is this micro-dermabrasian paste, followed by the night-renewing serum. It is honestly just as yummy as a facial and way less expensive!

3. Munchkin Basketball Hoop– My mom got this for Turner for Christmas. He loves it! He especially likes throwing the balls OUT of the tub and having us throw them back in!

4.Nuby Sippy Cup-We finally found the perfect sippy cup. Turner likes it and it doesn’t leak!! The poor little guy usually has milk dripping down his chin or the nipple gets turned inside out. But this one is, by far, our favorite!

5. Love You Wall Art– And because I love Valentine’s Day AND Target, we put out a few festive pieces to get pumped! I’ll have more on my Valentine’s Day Decor post to come!

Best Side Job Ever!

Thanks for your kind words and well wishes! After another bout with the baby throw-ups last night, we’ve done a lot of laundry, napped, and seem to be on the up and up! Poor little guy is passed out. Tomorrow is a new day, and let’s hope a sunny one!

So, for happy news, I have a new side job! Now, some of you may know that I manage an amazing vacation rental business on the absolutely stunning Dewees Island. And, I love my job….A LOT. Which is why this side gig was so unexpected! This is how it went down–

A few of my favorite things to do for ME are to go to the gym and to have play dates. I had a play date last week, which I try to do every so often, otherwise I spend way too much time talking to a baby! So, my girlfriend Toni came over with her son. The boys played while we drank some tea. It was an hour well spent!

I knew Toni worked from home, but I didn’t know the details. So, I asked her about it. She said she worked as an “executive consultant for Rodan and Fields“.

Sounded fun, but what did that mean? Well Rodan and Fields are the two dermatologists who created Proactive. Solid product… I was intrigued. “Rodan and Fields” is their new line of skincare products ranging from anti-aging to acne. Ok….I was more intrigued. Toni covers her mortgage and is putting money away for her son’s college fund while working about 5 hours a week….WHAT!? HOLD THE PHONE! SIGN ME UP! So, I asked her a million questions, she sent me a very detailed email outlining the process, and then I had a phone call with Toni and the girl who got her signed up. It was perfect because they were both able to answer all of my questions and fears. I really felt like I had nothing to lose! So I signed up!

The reason I wanted to share was because I’ve had SO MANY mommas ask me how I’m able to work from home full time! Not everyone is lucky enough to have a job where they have the flexibility of working from home full time. I even watched a special on the Today Show about how to work at home and raise your kids (most of them not practical). This tells me that a lot of people wish they could do it! So this is for you mommas who want to earn some extra money (maybe cover your mortgage and save for your baby’s college fund while you’re at it!?). It’s even for those of you who wish they could work part time and supplement with another job that allows you to stay home for the rest of the time! So, if you are intrigued, like I was, shoot me and email ( and I can get you the info to help you figure out if this is the right fit for you! Happy Saturday!
